WE ARE HACKS

It ought to be a matter of surprise how men live in the midst of marvels, without taking heed of their existence.
Fenimore Cooper
i love this print so much i could build a time machine and crawl into this scenery as it was being built and hug that damn local and that damn bonnet headed lass. look at this composition, and shear beauty, you have this proud romanticised Iroquois warrior thinking very deep thoughts amongst the oak openings, or maybe he's just thinking about his shoes, lunch, or what that bear said to him at breakfast, and then through the trees comes this little lady to ruin a perfectly good continent, with needlepoint, quilts, and pie.
go to art school see if i care.

we are hacks part 4

another fine art Saturday from the rain pissed streets of Seattle, kids, today is Dashiell's birthday party, six years and going strong for a nudist, here is some fine, extra fine art to amaze your poor poor fingers and eyes, yet another print i found within a book i purchased for a dollar, some people cut these books up and frame the prints, but that, is some people, good morning world.

let the art in.
god, just look at this dramatic composition, the tall grass, the old guy, cradled dog, weeping over dressed women, turbulent sun, boiling thunderclouds, or is it a night scene, a hunters moon, oh, and just feast your eyes on the young lad, so American with his perfect hair and displayed rifle, and look how belittled those brave insurgents stand at the horizon, just dumb enough to let these poor brave land grabbers live.
the greatest aspect of history is that you can choose to be on the losing side, and not have to die.

we are the hacks part three

now this print makes me want to go art school in Italy or somewhere very serious, and just look at the drama, of this scene, amazing, the canoe, the reeds, the warrior swimming the little peek around the cattails, holy shit. the moon light !
i want to be romantic.

we are all hacks part 2

another reason to work hard, draw everyday, eat your vegetables and draw some more, stay up late, struggle, and you will still never be this good.
and nether will i.

why, we are all hacks

last weekend i stopped at the first yard sale of the season, and bought two great books from 1880, you all know by now that i usually only read stuff i find randomly, the book is titled COOPER'S NOVELS upon opening i find this wonderful print, and am amazed and fall helplessly in love, the novel is titled. The Crater, and just look at the wonderful scene presented here, a shipwreck, with some well dressed marooned sailor, his tent, packed with gun and books a nice sombrero, wow, that's where i want to be, lost at sea, with a telescope and a goat.
fantastic.
i find myself staring at this print all week, opening the book starting to read, and slicing back the pages to this print, and knowing that we as artists are all Hacks, that any art we create now is toilet paper, pornography compared to the stunning masterpiece of this tiny print buried in an old book bought for a dollar.
we should all hang our heads today embarrassed at our chicken scratched failings.
i can't read the signature very well but think it reads John Writghson.
i am going out back to burn my studio to the ground.
