Carnival of Liberation Occupies Autonomia Social Center

On August 19th, a group of people marched from the northern end of the Central District down 23rd Avenue to the old Autonomia social center.  The bottom floor of the building has remained unused since the social center was forced to close in the fall of 2011 due to harassment and repression from the gentrifiers, the police, and the city of Seattle.

When the group arrived at the building they found food waiting and the door open.  After listening to a short speech people entered the space, ate food, listened to music, hung out on the street corner.  The police remained nearby by did not interfere with the festivities.  About two hours later, the occupiers of the building chose to leave rather than inevitably get arrested in the days or hours to come (although it is unclear if people did in fact chose to stay the night).

The event contributed to the increasing polarization between virulent yuppie-gentrifiers and the rest of the population. For example, a posh bo-bo couple flipped off the occupiers and were met with insults in return while a man who used to come to Autonomia welcomed everyone back to the neighborhood and was met with thanks.

The atmosphere of the event was generally positive and there was no repression to dampen people’s spirits.  It is hoped that people will continue occupying buildings, ideally with the intention of holding them.

Below is the speech that was given in front of the old Autonomia:

This building here once housed the Autonomia social center, but it was destroyed by the city of Seattle and the gentrifying neighbors who wanted it gone.  While it existed, the social center provided free clothes, food, and social events to the neighborhood and the wider area.  Now this space is empty and unutilized.

People often asked what we would do without police, laws, or capitalism.  Our answer, very simply, is this.  We will take back our lives from those who would take them from us.  This is the alternative.  What we are doing now is but the smallest glimpse of the world as should exist, a free world without money, without an economy, without capitalism.  We do not need the market, the government, the police, or their laws.  We are free people, and we will remain so. 

We wish to express solidarity with our comrades in Oakland, Parnell’s Market, the EZLN in Chiapas, Pussy Riot in Russia, and every rebel who fights in the international struggle against the capitalist world system.

Our bodies are our best weapons, our true weapons.  Remember how to use them.  Stay, eat, dance, hold the space, call your friends, and remember that we all possess the power to alter the world around us.  Never forget that power and hold onto it as long as you can.

Land Defense and Class Struggle: The Red-Green Alliance
Environmental destruction is the most urgent and immediate problem we face. If we don’t solve it, nothing else will matter. Capitalism converts raw materials (life) into commodities through the exploitation of labor. Because of its compulsion to constantly expand, capitalism will never be sustainable. The common ruin of contending classes is becoming increas­ingly likely. Yet as the economic and ecological crises converge, the possibility of liberation and social transformation also opens up — but only if we organize to make that happen.

Overthrow Dictatorship or Perfect Democracy? A Discussion Between the Commons and Get Money out of Politics
This panel will feature a variety of perspectives on how to change society, democracy, and the economy, or how to foment revolution. How, in the current moment, do we build move­ments? How do we interact with electoral politics? And how do we make an actually better world? This panel will engage in discussing capitalism and reform, the Democratic Party, democracy and rising movements. It aims to have dialog and debate on a variety of perspectives, revealing commonality and disagreements within Occupy.

Class Struggle: Organizing Across Student/ Worker Lines at Educational Institutions
How can students and workers organize together in ways conducive to their common liberation? How can we build together in ways that do not reinforce or expand systems of op­pression? How can we immunize ourselves against the divide and conquer strategies of bosses, administrators, and politicians that would otherwise have us fighting each other for the best scraps from them? How can we fight austerity measures in education (K-12 and higher ed.) in ways that recognize and respect all struggles as interconnected, including within and outside of institutions of education? This workshop will attempt provide some initial working answers to the above questions as well as open space for continued discussions and collaborations surrounding struggles in education.

Upcoming event: FBI Repression and Grand Jury Resistance presentation, Olympia

This event is taking place in Olympia, WA as part of New Direction Fest. You do not have to have a NDF ticket to attend this presentation.
On Wednesday, July 26, the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force raided three houses in Portland, looking for black clothing, electronics, flag-making materials, and anarchist literature. That same morning, they served federal grand jury subpoenas to two individuals in Portland and one individual in Olympia, for an investigative grand jury to convene on August 2nd in Seattle.
Federal investigative grand juries are secretive, repressive, and often misunderstood. This presentation will explore the nature and purpose of grand juries. We will also talk about tactics for resisting FBI repression, and what to do if you are approached by an FBI agent in relation to a grand jury or otherwise.
This workshop is presented by members of the Committee Against Political Repression, and is part of New Direction Fest. In order to make this presentation accessible to those who don’t have tickets to New Direction Fest, it will be held outside in a park. Unfortunately we’re not sure what the seating situation is going to be, we may have to all sit on the grass. If you have concerns about physical accessibility please get in touch with organizers of New Direction Fest to see about bringing chairs over from the Eagles Ballroom.
 

Our Passion for Freedom is Stronger than the State’s Prisons

This statement was given by grand jury resistors this morning at a press conference in Portland, OR:
Hi my name is Dennison. I will be reading a statement on behalf of Dennison Williams, Leah-Lynn Plante. The two of us were subpoenaed to the secret grand jury to begin meeting on Thursday investigating anarchists.
We are releasing this statement to make clear our intention to resist the grand jury. We will not co-operate with their investigation. If we appear before the grand jury, we will not answer any questions other than our names. If we are asked additional questions, we will invoke our First, Fourth,and Fifth Amendment rights. Under no circumstances will we talk about other people.
This grand jury is a tool of political repression. It is attempting to turn individuals against each other by coercing those subpoenaed to testify against their communities. The secret nature of grand jury proceedings creates mistrust and can undermine solidarity. And imprisoning us takes us from our loved ones and our responsibilities.
But our passion for freedom is stronger than the state’s prisons. Our refusal to cooperate with the grand jury is a reflection of our own desires for a liberated world and our support for others who are working to bring that world into being. We support the efforts of all those who will be resisting this grand jury.

More importantly, though, you can show your solidarity by refusing to co-operate with any police force and encouraging your friends and families to do the same. The police do not protect us, and do nothing to bring justice to those who have been hurt by others. If we want real safety, and real justice, we need to begin creating liberatory alternatives to the state’s institutions.
